The 59th annual WHAS Crusade for Children is June 2-3, 2012.

A new emergency transport unit specially designed for neonatal and pediatric patients was unveiled Thursday in front of the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital’s Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center.

Each year, up to 470 newborns are transported from hospitals across Central and Eastern Kentucky to Kentucky Children’s Hospital’s level III newborn intensive care unit. Additionally, the hospital’s pediatric team transports more than 260 critically ill or injured infants and children each year from area hospital emergency rooms to Kentucky Children’s Hospital, the region’s only level-one pediatric trauma center.

Dr. Carmel Wallace, interim chair of the UK Department of Pediatrics, and Dr. Scottie Day, pediatric critical care specialist, recognized representatives from WHAS Crusade for Children and Speedway who donated funding for the new pediatric critical care ambulance.

Also attending were members of the emergency transport team known as Kentucky Kids Crew, a specialty team that provides inter-facility (hospital-to-hospital) critical care transportation for neonatal and pediatric patients. The team, which has been providing transportation support to physicians and health care since 1979, is directed by neonatologists and pediatric intensivists, and includes critical care nurses with advanced training in neonatal and pediatric procedures.

“We greatly appreciate the support of WHAS Crusade for Children and Speedway and those that have contributed to their efforts to help provide this very special vehicle which helps our transport team deliver the most precious cargo to our hospital for life-saving, advanced specialty care,” Wallace said.

“We are grateful for your support of our team and for your commitment to helping infants and children of the Bluegrass.”

Crusade representatives attend event

WHAS Crusade for Children President & CEO Dawn Lee attended the ceremony along with Jody Meiman of Louisville Fire & Rescue and Joe Bowman from Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Protection District.

The morning begins with a playful exchange but for three-year-old Braeden Robinson there is a serious side for attending Visually Impaired Preschool or VIPS. Braeden has been diagnosed with a genetic abnormality that has profoundly affected his vision.

Amanda Robinson, Braeden’s mom says, “It’s Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis. But at the time of his diagnosis they really didn’t know how much he could see.”

Further testing proved that Braeden has no light perception at all. With the help of the staff at VIPS, Braeden is developing the skills he needs to excel.

Braeden’s teacher Melissa Evers says, “He has been introduced to Braille, beyond introduced, he knows lots of words, of brailles. If I ask him what a letter is he’ll say, “What’s the braille dots?”

Braeden and all the students at VIPS are getting help thanks in part to the Crusade for Children.

Heather Benson at VIPS says, “The Crusade funds are so important to us because they pay for our most important asset which are our teachers. Our teachers are highly educated in educating the young, blind and visually impaired.”

That specialized training is making all the difference for braeden.

What Braeden has lost in sight he may have gained in hearing. Amanda says once she discovered that Bbraeden has perfect pitch, she went about finding a piano teacher for him. His teacher said she didn’t take children under six. But once she saw Braeden’s talent she changed her mind.

The 59th Annual WHAS Crusade for Children is coming Saturday and Sunday, June 2 – 3, 2012.

A child can sometimes be a puzzle for parents. As WHAS11′s Melissa Swan discovered the Johnson family finally found the key to their son Jacob’s erratic behavior thanks to the WHAS Crusade for Children.

“I’ve always known something was wrong with Jacob,” said Rosa Johnson, Jacob’s mom.

Rosa says Jacob didn’t speak beyond a whisper or cope well with any change in his routine. Because of his behavior Rosa thought Jacob hated her. In an effort to understand him better, Rosa talked to a psychologist who suggested that Jacob be tested for Asperger’s Syndrome. Those tests confirmed that diagnosis.

“Jacob doesn’t hate me by any means. Jacob is just a little different,” said Rosa.

Jacob needed the right approach to unlock his potential. He’s getting that at Western Kentucky University’s Kelly Autism Program, an agency you support through donations to the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Marty Boman of the Kelly Autism Program said, “Jacob has changed tremendously since he first came to us. When he first came to us in June he was basically non-verbal.”

After only a few months in the program, Jacob is blossoming. His progress brings great satisfaction to his mom.

“I get to enjoy watch Jacob become Jacob. I get to watch him become more outgoing and more loving. That means the most to me!”

University of Louisville medical programs are celebrating because the WHAS Crusade for Children delivered a very big check.

“The WHAS Crusade for Children is so proud to present a total of ten grants for the University of Louisville. The total is $565,780,” announced Crusade CEO and President Dawn Lee.

That total will help U of L medical programs serve children who otherwise would be forced to travel to other cities to get the proper treatment.

Dr. Gerard Rabalais, University of Louisville Pediatrics Director said, “Having philanthropy step in with a half million dollars to support us is just vital. Otherwise we would have to turn children away. We‘d tell families, we’d tell pediatricians we can’t take care of your child.”

This year’s grant to help children with special needs brings the total to more than $20 million that the Crusade has granted U of L over the last forty years.
