In 1956, Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Chief Ernie Bohler got up on stage in a steamy Memorial Auditorium on 4th Street in Louisville. With $400 in his hand, he challenged all fire departments to support the Crusade for Children. It was just the third annual Crusade. This year marks the 56th Crusade.

The rest is history. Since that challenge, nearly 200 fire departments are involved each year raising funds for the WHAS Crusade for Children. Fire departments account for more than half of all Crusade donations by staging road blocks, cookouts, raffles, golf outings and so much more.

Firefighters have become the time-honored icon of the Crusade. Their goal: to make life better for children with special needs.

On May 9, 2009, Pleasure Ridge Park Fire District hosted an open house to show off its new Engine Co. 2 fire station located at 9500 Stonestreet Rd.

Here are photos from the big day.
