A mother’s tribute to the Crusade

June 4, 2009

Almost exactly three years ago, my young son died. During the 13 months he was in the ICU at Kosair-Children’s Hospital, there was not a single type of equipment that did not have a plaque reading “Paid for With Funds From the WHAS Crusade for Children” on it. From the ventilator that kept him breathing to the rocking chairs we held him in to the toys he played with during his more stable times, all were paid for with Crusade funds.

I would not wish this up-close and personal understanding of the Crusade on anyone, but I will say it’s been a transformative experience for our family. What was once an annoying siren-filled weekend with firefighters begging at street corners and slowing up traffic has turned into an entire week of honoring our son by becoming involved in the Crusade any way we can.

For our teenage kids, that means going door to door with our local fire department (which anyone can do — just call your local FD, they need all the help they can get).

For my husband and me, it means collecting spare change throughout the year and using it buy a personalized brick in front of the WHAS studios. For everyone else in the community, keep spare change in your cars; if you see firefighters or volunteers at street lights, bring them a cold drink. Volunteer at your local fire department to cook or bring food to the firefighters and volunteers before they go out in the evenings collecting.

It sounds trite and hokey, but one person can do something, and every little bit you can do does make a difference.

It made a difference to our family, and we honor the contributions that helped our son by bringing in contributions that will one day help other children — a beautiful circle.

This is the year to dig deep. Drop your dollars, fives, tens and twenties into firefighter boots at road blocks for the 56th Annual WHAS Crusade for Children June 6 – 7.

Firefighters are out in full force across Kentucky and Indiana. Help change a child’s life, support the WHAS Crusade for Children…now more than ever!
