Courier-Journal editorial June 3, 2010

We’re Crusaders
The upcoming weekend is special throughout Kentuckiana. It is the time when individuals and organizations open their wallets, and open their hearts, to help sick and disabled kids with donations to the fabled, and time-tested, WHAS Crusade for Children. This year, the 57th in Crusade history, should be no different.

Even as wallets and hearts open again for the Crusade’s annual fund-raising drive, no one can ignore that the longtime charity has come through a tough year.

Aside from strained economic times, which made it difficult for donors to contribute to any philanthropic group, by virtue of association the Crusade was part of the drawn-out news story involving former McMahan Fire Chief Paul Barth and allegations that he bilked more than $189,000 meant for the charity.

Mr. Barth, former chairman of the Crusade’s board of directors, is no longer associated with either the fire department or the Crusade, and he has been indicted on a number of federal charges.

For its part, the Crusade moved wisely and deliberately to examine how such trespasses, if true, could have occurred and what could be done to prevent the same in the future.

In April, the group announced a number of tighter controls and strengthened procedures that not only should protect the charity’s sterling-silver brand but should also inspire the public’s confidence in continuing to give to a group that gives back so much.

Since its start in 1954, more than $133 million has been raised to help agencies, schools and hospitals that have helped millions of children in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Tax-deductible donations, big and small, roll in, in piggy banks, firefighter boots, in check form and online. Agencies, hospitals, schools and other groups apply for grants and appear before the Independent Crusade Advisory Panel, which decides where the contributions go. The demand for grants always exceeds the donations received.

That — not the Barth headlines — is what the community should keep in mind as Crusade fund-raising goes into high gear this weekend. The economy has strengthened a bit, and the Crusade for Children is coming out on the other side of a rough time with more and better guidelines in place.

Now it’s time for each of us to do our part: Give what we can.
