Some would say the most spectacular annual events in these parts have already taken place this year: The fireworks of Thunder Over Louisville set the night sky ablaze in April and the thoroughbreds pounded through the most exciting two minutes in sports in May’s Kentucky Derby.

Flashy showstoppers, to be sure, but for our money — and yours and yours, too — the most thrilling occasion happens this weekend, the first in June. It’s when the community unites to support the most successful local telethon in the country, the WHAS Crusade for Children, an effort that benefits area children with special needs.

You know it’s Crusade time because of all the firefighters at intersections on Saturday and Sunday with their boots held out for donations. Because of the kids with their penny collections and refreshment stands to raise money for the cause, too. Because of the homey TV coverage of people coming together to do something good. Because of your own instinct to give.

It is, indeed, a special time for this community. In the 59 years of the Crusade, people have given more than $148 million to help children, and the agencies that work with them; the money donated within a county stays in that county and 100 percent of the money raised goes to those service providers.

Dawn Lee, president and CEO of the WHAS Crusade for Children, says this 60th year of the event has presented the opportunity for a special challenge to donors. “The Crusade historically does not set goals. However this year we did to honor the 60th,” she said. “Our goal is to raise $6 million. We are asking that everyone try to give at least $60 to honor 60 Crusades and help us reach this stretch goal.”

If the recent past is any indication, there is cause for optimism about reaching that mark.

“It took 50 years to raise the first $100 million and $50 million has been raised in the last 10 years,” Ms. Lee noted. “That is a tribute to this community.”

She expects the Crusade to top the $150 million mark sometime in the 10 p.m. hour on Saturday. That will happen because we give a little or give a lot — because we give, period.

This is the weekend for it. Find a boot, or a kids’ neighborhood refreshment stand, or call the telethon phone banks at (502) 571-2345 or (866) 885-1848 starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, or go to www.whascrusade.org, and be part of the most thrilling time of the year around here. It can’t happen without you.
