Editorial salutes the 60th annual WHAS Crusade for Children

A June 5 Courier-Journal editorial salutes WHAS Crusade for Children. Thanks to all for a memorable weekend.

THE POWER OF GIVING

The power of a giving community was evident this past weekend when the final total for WHAS Crusade for Children was announced.

This year marked the 60th anniversary for the Crusade, which has helped thousands of kids with special needs over the past decades, and the drive reached its goal by raising more than $6 million.

It is in events like these that we are able to see the collective power of individuals with a common purpose. The work and hours that were poured into the Crusade were part of a yearlong effort, with the help of many people in Kentucky and Southern Indiana — including 200 fire departments and thousands of volunteers.

Milton Metz, a longtime WHAS radio and television personality, said in a Monday Courier-Journal article that it has been a privilege to watch the organization grow and that he is inspired by his participation in the Crusade.

“The weight of the pennies is enough to give you a hernia, they give you so much,” Mr. Metz said. “You realize that it transcends politics or race or age, farmers or city people giving millions of dollars.”

From firefighters holding boots at local intersections to the telethon this past weekend, the Crusade is visible in our community, and a reminder of the good that can be done by caring people.

And, the work doesn’t end with this year’s Crusade. Visit crusadeforchildren.org for information on how to pledge your support.

60th Crusade tops $6 million!

At the close of the 60th annual WHAS Crusade for Children the goal of $6 million set by the Crusade staff a few months ago was realized. Live on WHAS11, 84WHAS and whas11.com, the toteboard rolled up one more time to reveal the total of $6,001,342.00.

There are so many great stories of hard work, laughter and joy.

Thanks from the Crusade

This letter to the editor appeared in the June 4, 2013 edition of the Courier-Journal.

People of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, we honor 60 years with a grand total of $6,001,342! On behalf of the Crusade, we are so thankful for your generous efforts and response to the 60th Annual WHAS Crusade for Children. Once again, you have risen to the occasion to help us serve children with special needs. It is remarkable to see this community pull together every year and create a miracle.

We thank so many children, parents, churches, synagogues and schools who collected for the Crusade. We thank the businesses and organizations who made contributions. We are immensely grateful to all those firefighters, their families and friends who spent thousands of hours fundraising and collecting throughout the year. They certainly didn’t let the weather on Saturday slow them down! We thank all the schools, agencies, hospitals and treatment facilities who serve the special needs of our children in so many different ways. They are the people we are privileged to serve and support every year.

To every volunteer in our Kentuckiana area who ran, walked, collected, answered phones, counted, entertained, provided food and did something for the WHAS Crusade for Children this past year we say thank you, thank you, thank you. It is an honor for us to serve this generous community for the greater good of all our children.
