Veteran says “give money to the Crusade”

From our flagship station WHAS11:

EMINENCE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A disabled veteran’s flag was destroyed outside his Eminence, Ky. home two weeks ago. He was so upset at this act; he took his frustration to YouTube.

“I had my flag proudly displayed outside my house. I’m outside cutting my grass and what do I find? That last night somebody cut my flag to pieces. That cuts my heart, that is my heart,” veteran Charles “Poppy” Turner, Sr. said.

Turner posted the video looking for answers, but found a community of patriotism. He says he’s received thousands of Facebook friend requests and well-wishes from around the world.

“It’s all been thank you for your service and I put a smiley face on there or say some little thing. It’s kind of hard to respond to every single one, but I’m trying,” Turner said.

One person was so moved by the video they started a fundraiser “Flag Pole for Poppy”. Turner said with or without donations he will save up to get that pole.

“I want to put it right there in the middle of the driveway and that way. It’s going to be out flying for everyone in Eminence to see and if they want to cut it, they’ve got to climb a 30 foot poll to do it,” Turner said.

Turner was clear he does not want anyone to send him money. He says that is not what this is about, he wants an apology.

“It’s about the flag not about the money; it’s about doing the right thing. If somebody wants to send money, send it to the Crusade for Children or your favorite charity. Don’t send it to me because I will send it back,” he said.
