Veteran Crusader Bill Thomas dies

Part of every WHAS Crusade for Children weekend for decades, longtime Crusade fire coordinator, Bill Thomas has died.

For many years, he was stationed at one of the check points around the WHAS11 building directing fire trucks during the Crusade telethon. In recent years, he and his wife Myra helped organize the Crusade remote broadcast in Ballardsville, Kentucky held every year on the first Sunday in June.

William “Bill” M. Thomas, 83, of LaGrange, Kentucky passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023
He was born to the late George Mitchell and Judith Ann (Terry) Thomas on January 17, 1940 in Joplin, Missouri.

Bill reached Captain with the LaGrange Fire and Rescue Department where he worked on Truck 4581 and loved being involved with the WHAS Crusade for CHildren. He was a Volunteer Deputy with the Oldham County Sheriff’s Office for many years. Bill loved taking back road, road trips for coffee and lunch with his wife, Myra. He attended Crestwood Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandson; Ethan Knight.

Left to cherish the memory of Bill are his wife of 29 years; Myra Thomas, children; Scott Thomas and Amy Thomas Nichter (Joe), step-children; Rick Barnard, Gail Story, and Andrea Knight (Jeff), grandchildren; Stephanie Holtzman (Ryan), Jason Sparrow (Amber), Madison Nichter, Macey Picklesimer (Tyler), and Ella Knight, great-grandchildren; Andrew and Jackson Sparrow, Maddex Troxel, and Olivia Holtzman, extended family and many friends.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home, 706 W Jefferson St, LaGrange, KY on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 2pm with burial to follow at Valley of Rest. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 until the start of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to WHAS Crusade for Children in Bill’s name.
