LOUISVILLE, August 7, 2019 – RAM Racing, the nation’s premier endurance sports event production company, is thrilled to announce its acquisition of the 35-year-old Louisville Triple Crown of Running Series. Since 1995, RAM/EnMotive has helped different service aspects of these events, such as timing, registration, and photography. Now we are poised to carry on the torch of these iconic races, after acquiring the running series from the previous owners.

The Louisville Triple Crown of Running Series, a series of well-established road races of varying distances announced its cancellation in June, marking 2019 as the final running of the race series. “The 2019 edition has already taken place. We couldn’t let such an important series to the Louisville running community disappear. We know it’s become a staple in Louisville,” states Steve Ginsburg, CEO of RAM. “At RAM, we are committed to helping running communities nationwide thrive. When possible, we will always jump in and do our best to serve individual running communities any way we can.”

The Triple Crown race series focused on helping more runners and walkers in the Kentuckiana area embrace a healthy lifestyle and achieve the goal of completing the three-race series. RAM Racing embraces this mission through events that cater to all athletes of different fitness levels, making running an approachable sport that is enjoyed by all.

The 2020 race series will include the traditional 5k and 10k, but as an exciting change, the final leg of the revitalized series will be the inaugural Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k Louisville. Frequently referred to as America’s Sweetest Race, the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k race series was established by RAM in 2008. The Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k is an annual favorite on runners’ calendars: every year over 200,000 participants run for chocolate, making it the fastest-growing race series in the nation. The series combines industry-leading production and safety standards with award-winning giveaways including finisher’s medal and mugs filled with hot chocolate, chocolate fondue, and tasty dippable treats! More than one million people have run in a Hot Chocolate 15k/5k race since its inception, currently with races in 22 cities nationally, three cities in Mexico, and counting!

RAM Racing will honor Triple Crown’s longtime traditions by continuing its charity partnership with WHAS Crusade for Children as the charity of choice for the 5k and 10k races. Make-A-Wish® will continue to be the charity for the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k.

The 5k event will be held on 3/7/2020, 10K on 3/21/2020 and the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k race is scheduled to take place in Louisville Waterfront Park on April 4, 2020. Participants will be able to bundle all three races in registration and will receive a finisher medal for completing the 5k, 10k, and 15k within the series. The series will also include kids races in its production.

The WHAS Crusade for Children Endowment

In September, 2002, the WHAS Crusade for Children Board of Directors voted to create the new Crusade Endowment.

It guarantees that 100 percent of the Crusade’s annual telethon collections continue to go directly to agencies that help children with special needs. It ensures that millions more children will be helped for decades to come.

  • 100% of each donation to the WHAS Crusade for Children helps children with special needs
  • The Crusade Endowment Campaign fully funds our future.
  • Beyond your annual contribution, we need your Crusade Endowment donation now.

How the Crusade works

The WHAS Crusade for Children, Inc. established in 1954 by WHAS-TV, raises money for agencies, schools and hospitals to better the lives of special needs children.

$190 million raised for special needs children
In its first 66 years, the Crusade has raised more than $190 million. Thanks to generous contributions of goods and services, the Crusade is able to return 100 percent of all donations to organizations that serve special needs children in all 120 Kentucky counties and more than 50 southern Indiana counties. Fire departments raise more than 50 percent of the money each year by staging road blocks and other events

An independent board decides
An independent board of interdenominational ministers known as the Crusade Advisory Panel decides how donations are distributed each year.

Agencies apply for grants
Representatives from agencies, schools and hospitals apply for grants and appear before the panel during grant hearings held each spring. Once the hearings are complete, the advisory panel determines which agencies receive Crusade donations.

Since agency grant requests far exceed donations to the Crusade each year, the panel has difficult decisions to make.

For a complete listing of grant application rules, click here.

The Crusade telethon airs in June
The annual Crusade Internet/radio/telethon is held each year on the first full weekend in June and is aired on WHAS Radio (AM 840), WHAS-TV (Channel 11.1) and worldwide on WHAS11.com. Portions of the broadcast are also seen and heard on a Kentucky statewide network.

Millions of children have been helped
Millions of children have been helped by the Crusade since 1954.

Donations are tax deductible
The WHAS Crusade for Children, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Gifts are tax deductible as permitted by law. The Crusade is the most successful and oldest local telethon in America.

Kentuckiana = Communities with big hearts!

Communities in Kentucky and southern Indiana came together once again for the 66th Annual WHAS Crusade for Children to make life better for children with special needs. The final tote board tallied $5,690,000 as America’s most successful local telethon came to a close. That tops the 2018 total by $15,000.

The 30-hour Internet/radio/telethon was highlighted by a variety show hosted by WHAS11’s Lisa Hutson and 840 WHAS Radio’s Terry Meiners on Saturday, June 1. It concluded with a surprise donation from the Sam Swope Family Foundation to round the total up and Crusade volunteers crowding into WHAS-TV’s historic studio H singing the traditional “God Bless America” just before 7:00pm (EDT) Sunday, June 2, 2019.

“Every year I continue to be amazed at the way this community comes together to help children with special needs. The WHAS Crusade for Children continues to be a great demonstration of caring and coming together for the greater purpose of helping children with special needs. A huge thank you to all who gave, the firefighters who worked tirelessly to collect, and the dedicated volunteers that help every year. Every penny really makes a difference, and we are so grateful for the continued generosity of this community,” said WHAS Crusade for Children President & CEO Dawn Lee.

More than $185 million for the kids
In its first 66 years, the Crusade has raised more than $185 million for children with special needs. One hundred percent of all donations raised Crusade weekend are returned in the form of grants to agencies, schools and hospitals that make life better for children with special needs in Kentucky and southern Indiana.

It takes a cast of thousands to stage the annual miracle. From individual donors dropping pocket change into boots at firefighter road blocks to children with lemonade stands to corporations offering payroll deduction, it all comes together each year on the first weekend in June.

More for the Kids Matching Hours
In honor of the 66th WHAS Crusade for Children, several sponsors matched the first $6,600 worth of donations that were called in or made online during their sponsored hours. They were Clark Memorial Health, Joe Huber’s Family Farm & Restaurant, LG&E KU Foundation, Republic Bank Foundation, Superior Van & Mobility, and University of Louisville. In addition, First Harrison Bank and an anonymous donor matched the first $1,500 worth of donations called in or made online during their sponsored hours.

The Leaders
Nearly 60 percent of donations are collected by about 200 fire departments in Kentucky and southern Indiana. Fern Creek Fire Department led the way with $194,176.54 as their Chief Mike Schmidt retires this year.

Fire departments got involved with the Crusade in 1956 when Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Chief Ernie Bohler brought $400 on the Memorial Auditorium stage in Louisville and challenged all fire departments to get involved.

Like last year, the top Indiana fire department was Lafayette Township Fire Department with their highest total yet of $118,161.

Also repeating from last year, the Archdiocese of Louisville led the community organizations with $273,613 in contributions.

So many to thank
The annual Crusade Internet/radio/telethon kicked off at 1:00pm (EDT) on Saturday, June 1 and aired in its entirety on 840 WHAS Radio, WHAS11 and worldwide on WHAS11.com. WHAS11.com provided LIVE video streaming of the entire broadcast visible anywhere in the world. WHAS11 also simulcast the entire Crusade weekend program on YouTube and Facebook Live. Updates were posted all weekend long on WHASCrusade.org, and donors across the country made secure online donations.

In addition, WBNA-TV 21.1 in Louisville aired live broadcasts 12:30pm to 6:30pm Sunday, June 2, from the Kentucky cities of Elizabethtown, Shelbyville and Bardstown. WBKO-TV in Bowling Green aired remote telecasts from Campbellsville on Saturday and Leitchfield on Sunday.

About the WHAS Crusade for Children
The WHAS Crusade for Children, established by WHAS-TV in 1954, raises money for schools, agencies and hospitals that make life better for children with special needs. In its first 66 years, the Crusade has raised more than $185 million. Thanks to generous contributions of goods and services, the Crusade returns 100 percent of all donations to organizations in all 120 Kentucky counties and more than 50 southern Indiana counties. Fire departments raise nearly 60 percent of the money each year by staging road blocks and other events.

Millions of children have been helped by the Crusade since 1954. The WHAS Crusade for Children, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Gifts are tax-deductible as permitted by law.
