2009 WHAS Crusade for Children Grants

2008 WHAS Crusade for Children Grants

Grant Process

WHAS Crusade for Children grants are made to non-profit agencies, schools and hospitals that help children with special needs up to age 18. The term “special needs” is defined as physical, mental, emotional and medical needs.

  • Grants are for direct services only.
  • No grants are made to individuals or families.
  • Grants are made for specific programs or equipment that provide direct benefit to special needs children and are not general operating grants.
  • No grants are made for administrative needs.

Grant year

The grant year is September 1 through August 31.

Application process

Applications are available online here on this Web site. All agencies that received a grant this year are notified about applying for next year. To request an application, a non-profit agency, school or hospital should send a letter (on letterhead signed by the agency director or school superintendent) to the WHAS Crusade for Children at the address listed below.

The deadline for grant applications is January each year. Agencies that qualify are scheduled for a grant hearing with the Crusade Advisory Panel of ministers during March or April. Every agency requesting funds must meet with the panel to explain their grant needs and answer questions.

Final grant determinations are made after Crusade Weekend (the first full weekend in June).

Grant letters are mailed out in July.

To receive a grant application, send a request on agency letterhead signed by the agency director or school superintendent to:

  • WHAS Crusade for Children
  • Grant Application
  • 520 W. Chestnut St.
  • Louisville, KY 40202

Geographic eligibility
Agencies serving special needs children from Kentucky and southern Indiana are eligible to receive grants. The Crusade must have support from a county before grants can be made to a school, hospital or agency located in that county. Consideration is given to facilities that serve children from many counties.

Application support material
Applicants must provide the following support materials with their grant application:

  • Current IRS 990
  • Current independent audit
  • Current board member list
  • IRS determination letter
  • Current annual report
  • Advisory Panel

Every year there are more grant applications than available funds. The WHAS Crusade for Children Advisory Panel must determine the best use of the donated funds to serve the largest number of special needs children. The panel consists of ten interdenominational ministers who give many hours of their time to the grant process.

About the WHAS Crusade for Children
The WHAS Crusade for Children, Inc. established by WHAS-TV in 1954, raises money for schools, agencies and hospitals to better the lives of special needs children. In its first 56 years, the Crusade has raised more than $133 million.

Thanks to generous contributions of goods and services, the Crusade is able to return 100% of all donations to organizations that serve special needs children in all 120 Kentucky counties and more than 50 southern Indiana counties. Fire departments raise more than 50 percent of the money each year by staging road blocks and other events.

Approximately 3 million children have been helped by the Crusade since 1954.

The WHAS Crusade for Children, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Gifts are tax deductible as permitted by law. The Crusade is the most successful and oldest local telethon in America.
