Fire departments make the Crusade special

This is why fire departments do so much

Meet Zoe! She’s a shining example of what a difference your Crusade donations can make in the life of a child.

Fire departments raise nearly 60 percent of the Crusade for Children’s donations each year by staging road blocks and other events.

It all started in 1956 when Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Chief Ernie Bohler stood on stage during the third annual Crusade in a steamy un-air-conditioned Memorial Auditorium and challenged all fire departments to join the cause. The challenge was heard loud and clear.

Helping make life better for children with special needs

Agencies, hospitals and schools across Kentuckiana that serve children with special needs got some great news from the WHAS Crusade for Children this week.

The Crusade sent out grant letters on July 1 to organizations to let them know their requests will be funded from the $5,500,000 collected during the 64th annual WHAS Crusade for Children.

The 30-hour broadcast aired on WHAS11 television, 840WHAS radio, WBNA-TV21 (Louisville), WBKO-TV13 (Bowling Green) and worldwide on WHAS11.com during the weekend of June 3 and 4.

Providence High School penny war raises thousands

Compassion + Generosity + Friendly Competition = $3021.21 for children with special needs. Students at Providence High School raised thousands for the WHAS Crusade for Children in their annual Penny War.

The Junior class raised the most money in the school’s Penny War this year. One student even donated her entire paycheck.

Crusade kids were the real winners. 100% of all donations to the WHAS Crusade for Children are granted to hospitals, schools and agencies in Kentucky and southern Indiana that provide direct services for children with special needs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — He was a fixture on the WHAS Crusade for Children from its beginnings in 1954.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of WHAS-TV and Radio legend, Milton Metz. He died peacefully in Louisville at the age of 95.

Milton became one of this area’s most recognized personalities, first heard on WHAS Radio in 1946. He helped put WHAS-TV on the air. In fact, he was one of the first faces you saw on WHAS-TV in 1950.

Milton just celebrated his 95th birthday in September in rehab. The WHAS Crusade for Children staff brought him a cake. More than 300 viewers mailed get well cards to him after he had fallen and broken his shoulder in the summer and was in recovery last August. He loved every card and letter, and along the way, he always said he was getting wonderful care.

His trailblazing nighttime radio show called “Metz Here” was one of the first nighttime talk shows in the United States. It ran from 1959 to 1993.

He also hosted “Omelet” on WHAS-TV, an interview program that aired before the Noon News on WHAS-TV. He picked Faith Lyles as his co-host.

He retired from 840 WHAS-AM in 1993 but kept doing ads for TV and Radio.

He came to Louisville from Columbus, Ohio and married his beloved wife Mimi whom he met in Louisville. She died last April. He is survived by his son Perry Metz.

Funeral arrangements are pending through the Herman Meyer Funeral Home.

Planet Fitness new Presenting Sponsor for Triple Crown

PLANET FITNESS NAMED PRESENTING SPONSOR FOR
2017 LOUISVILLE TRIPLE CROWN OF RUNNINGSM

Louisville, KY (August 23, 2016) – The Louisville Triple Crown of Running (LTCOR) today announced that the Louisville-based franchisee of Planet Fitness has signed on as the presenting sponsor of the popular three-race series. The Planet Fitness franchise led by brothers David and Rick Kueber owns and operates 25 Planet Fitness clubs in five states, including eight area clubs in Louisville and southern Indiana.

“We are excited to welcome Planet Fitness as our new title sponsor,” said Fred Teale, Rodes City Run Race Director and LTCOR spokesperson. “We think their focus on making fitness available to folks who may have never before belonged to a gym will help us continue to expand the number of participants in our three events.”

As part of the sponsorship, all Louisville-area Planet Fitness clubs will offer a training program beginning this fall, and help pay the entry fee for members who want to walk or run the events for the first time.

“Planet Fitness provides everyday people affordable access to great cardio and other workout equipment, in a clean and judgement free environment,” said Rick Kueber, CEO of the Louisville-based Planet Fitness franchise. “We are excited to partner with the Louisville Triple Crown of Running to give our members another way to improve their health, no matter where they might be in their fitness journey.”

A startling statistic from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta: currently 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder. The study also says that early intervention is the key to helping those diagnosed. The Ash family is taking that advice to heart. They’re getting early help for grandson Walter, thanks to the WHAS Crusade for Children and the Dorman PreSchool Center.
